The sn-2 Difference

PRECONCEPTION

BREASTFEEDING

It is commonly known that DHA is an essential fatty acid required in our diets, however it’s less known that as a triglyceride molecule, DHA has 3 double bonds attached to it and the position of each double bond can have an impact on its properties and effects in the body.

When it comes to absorption in the body, DHA at the sn-2 position can enter the brain and of the DHA found in breastmilk, 52-65% is located at the sn-2 position.

Furthermore, DHA located at the sn-2 position oxidizes slower over time, which makes it a more stable form of DHA.

Perdays Pregnancy DHA contains up to 25% more sn-2 DHA than common algal DHA, making it a great choice for preconception, pregnancy & breastfeeding.

What is sn-2 DHA?

When it comes to dietary fats, the position of the double bond on the fatty acid chain can have an impact on its properties and effects on the body.
The “sn-2” position refers to a specific location on the glycerol molecule where the fatty acid is attached.
In the case of DHA, when it is esterified at the sn-2 position, it means that it is attached at the second carbon atom on the glycerol molecule.
Studies have shown that DHA in the sn-2 position may have better absorption and bioavailability than DHA in other positions.

I am vegan/vegetarian. Is Pregnancy DHA suitable for me?

Whilst the DHA used in this product is a vegan source of DHA, the soft-gel capsules contain bovine-derived gelatine which makes them unsuitable for those following a vegan/vegetarian diet.

Is the DHA sourced from fish?

No, the DHA we use is derived from the marine algae, Schizochytrium species.

What sort of food do you recommend I take with Pregnancy DHA?

To assist with the absorption of omega-3s, we recommend taking Pregnancy DHA with a meal that contains healthy fats. Dietary fats stimulate bile secretion and pancreatic enzyme release, which improves the breakdown and absorption of the omega-3s.

Can I take Pregnancy DHA if I am breastfeeding?

Yes, Pregnancy DHA is breastfeeding friendly, however we always recommend that you to consult a healthcare practitioner before changing or starting any supplements or medication.

Are the capsules easy to swallow?

Yes. Perdays Pregnancy DHA is a mini soft-gel capsule, so when it comes in contact with moisture (in your mouth) it glides, for easy swallowing.

What is the difference between Pregnancy DHA, Pregnancy Key Essentials & DHA and Pregnancy Opti-Smart + DHA?

Pregnancy Key Essentials & DHA is our prenatal formula that contains 12 essential vitamins & minerals, plus algae-derived DHA to help support your specific nutritional requirements during pregnancy. This formula is delivered in our signature Nutriseal-Caps™ technology, which protects the nutrients in the inner capsule from moisture and temperature changes for better product stability. It delivers 200mg DHA per day.

Pregnancy Opti-Smart + DHA is a synergistic blend of four active ingredients that specifically target foetal brain and eye development during pregnancy, including betacarotene, lutein, zeaxanthin and DHA. This formula contains advanced algae derived DHA with a high sn-2 content, which results in a higher bioavailability for optimal absorption. This formula is also delivered in our signature encapsulation technology, Nutriseal-Caps™. It delivers 200mg sn-2 DHA per day.

Pregnancy DHA is for women seeking a single-ingredient DHA supplement. It contains our advanced algae derived DHA with a high sn-2 content, which results in a higher bioavailability for optimal absorption. This formula is delivered in a soft-gel format, making it well-suited to women experiencing nausea in the first trimester. It delivers 230mg sn-2 DHA per capsule and can be taken up to 3 times per day.

How much DHA can I take per day?

Studies involving pregnant participants, have utilised daily doses between 200 – 2200mg per day of DHA. Perdays utilises a combination of international health authority recommendations and the latest human clinical research to determine dosage instructions. DHA requirements increase during pregnancy due to the increased nutrient requirements of a woman and her baby as her pregnancy progresses.

We recommend:
Women trying to conceive – 1 capsule per day
0-12 weeks pregnant – 1 capsule per day
13-27 weeks pregnant – 2 capsules per day
28-40 weeks pregnant – 2-3 capsules per day
